Incoterms, simplified
The terms of sale decide who pays each stage and where the risk passes.
EXW · Ex Works. The buyer collects from the seller’s premises and handles everything after, export customs included.
FCA · Free Carrier. The seller clears export and hands the goods to the buyer’s carrier.
FAS · Free Alongside Ship. The seller delivers the goods next to the vessel at the port of loading.
FOB · Free On Board. The seller loads the goods on the vessel; risk passes once on board.
CFR · Cost and Freight. The seller pays the sea freight; risk passes to the buyer on board.
CIF · Cost, Insurance and Freight. Like CFR, and the seller also buys basic insurance for the buyer.
CPT · Carriage Paid To. The seller pays transport to the destination; risk passes at the first carrier.
CIP · Carriage and Insurance Paid To. Like CPT, and the seller also buys full insurance cover.
DAP · Delivered at Place. The seller delivers to the named place; the buyer clears import and pays duties.
DPU · Delivered at Place Unloaded. Like DAP, but the seller also unloads the goods.
DDP · Delivered Duty Paid. The seller handles everything, including import duties; the buyer just receives the goods.
